Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The more stable species has to be identified from the given species.
Concept Introduction:
Features that decrease the predicted stability:
- An atom with an incomplete octet.
- A negative charge that is not on the most electronegative atom.
- A positive charge on that is on an electronegative atom.
- Charge separation.
Resonance is an electron displacement effect for stabilizing a molecule through delocalization of bonding electrons in the pi orbital.
Delocalized electrons stabilize a compound. The extra stability gains from having delocalized electrons are called resonance stabilization or resonance energy.
