Concept introduction: In monosaccharides, the chiral center which is farthest from the carbonyl carbon atom is known as the highest-numbered chiral centre.  It determines the configuration of a monosaccharide.  If the highest-numbered chiral centre involves the −OH group on the right, then the monosaccharide is a D-enantiomer.  If the  −OH group is present on the left side, then the monosaccharide is an L-enantiomer
