Chapter 7, Problem 85P
Summary Introduction
To explain: The way portfolio optimization can be applied so that the decision on the companies to be purchased is made.
Non-linear programming (NLP):
Non-linear programming (NLP) is used in complex optimization problems where the objectives or constraints or sometimes both are non-linear functions of the decision variables. A model can be termed as non-linear for more than one reason.

Suppose that this particular study compared a large group of individuals who play squash regularly with those of an equal-sized group who get no exercise at all. Playing squash does provide a good cardiovascular workout. However, we also know that squash players tend to be affluent enough to belong to clubs with squash courts. Wealthy individuals may have great access to health care, which can also improve cardiovascular health. If our analysis is sloppy, we may attribute health benefits to playing squash when in fact the real benefit comes from being wealthy enough to play squash (in which case playing polo would also be associ ated with better heart health, even though the horse is doing most of the work). Or perhaps causality goes the other direction. Could having a healthy heart “cause” exercise? Yes. Individuals who are infirm, particularly those who have some incipient form of heart disease, will find it much harder to exercise. They will certainly be less likely to play squash…

- The manager of a small firm is considering whether to produce a new product that would require leasing some special equipment at a cost of$20,000 per month. In addition to this leasing cost, a production cost of$10 would be incurred for the first 1000 units (including the 1000th unit). After that, a production cost of$15 would be incurred for the rest. Each unit sold generates$20 in revenue. Determine how many units should be produced each month to make it profitable to produce this product.arrow_forwardCreate a spreadsheet to calculate your projected total costs, total revenues, and total profits for giving a seminar on cost estimating. Make the following assumptions: You will charge $600 per person for a two-day class. You estimate that 30 people will attend the class, but you want to change this input. Your fixed costs include $500 total to rent a room for both days, setup fees of $400 for registration, and $300 for designing a postcard for advertising. Youwill not include your labor costs for this estimate, but you estimate that you will spend at least 150 hours developing materials, managing the project, and giving the actual class. You would like to know what your time is worth given different scenarios. Youwill order 5,000 postcards, mail 4,000, and distribute the rest to friends and colleagues. Yourvariable costs include the following: $5perperson for registration plus 4 percent of the class fee per person to handle credit card processing; assume that everyone pays…arrow_forwardUse slover to solve this and share excelarrow_forward
