Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The average particle size and surface area per unit mass of solid are to be determined for a packed bed.

Concept Introduction:

Pressure drop in a packed bed during laminar flow depends on superficial velocity, particle diameter and void fraction. However, this assumption works only when the Reynolds number is less than unity. The surface area to volume ratio of non-spherical particles is inversely proportional to the particle diameter and sphericity. Finally, volume of particles is defined as the ratio of mass to density of the particles.
