Concept introduction:
The curved arrow notation keeps track of electrons in an elementary step. Curved arrows are drawn from the electron rich to electron poor sites. An electrophilic addition step occurs when a species containing a non-polar pi bond (as part of a double or triple bond) approaches a strongly electron-deficient species (an electrophile). A new bond is formed between atoms of the pi bond and the electrophile. The product of each of the electrophilic addition is a carbocation, which is highly unstable and will react further because it has a positive charge and lacks an octet.
