In electrophilic elimination, an electrophile such as a proton is eliminated from a carbocation, generating a stable uncharged molecule. The electrophile is eliminated from a carbon adjacent to the positively charged carbon. A base is necessary to extract the electrophile being eliminated. The base is electron rich and forms a bond with the electrophile. The electrophile-carbon bond pair moves toward the positively charged carbon, forming a second (π) bond between the two carbons.
