Chapter 7, Problem 29E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

There are two types of semiconductor intrinsic semiconductor and extrinsic semiconductor. Intrinsic semiconductor is pure form of semiconductor (Si or Ge) but in extrinsic semiconductor small amount of trivalent or pentavalent impurity is added to increase the conductivity.

Trivalent atom like Indium (In). Boron(B) Aluminium(Al) etc

Pentavalent atom like Arsenic(As), Antimony(Sb), Phosphorous(P) etc

Concept introduction: Add impurity (trivalent or pentavalent) to change the number of charge carriers, and to increase conductivity.

To determine: doping can increase the conductivity of a semiconductor.
