Let A and B represent two variants (alleles) of the DNA at a certain locus on the genome. Assume that 40% of all the alleles in a certain population are type A and 30% are type B. The locus is said to be in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium if the proportion of organisms that are of type A B is (0.40) (0.30) = 0.12. In a sample of 300 organisms, 42 are of type AB. Can you conclude that this locus is not in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium?

Suppose that in Example 2.27, 400 units of food A, 500 units of B, and 600 units of C are placed in the test tube each day and the data on daily food consumption by the bacteria (in units per day) are as shown in Table 2.7. How many bacteria of each strain can coexist in the test tube and consume all of the food? Consider a simple economy with just two industries: farming and manufacturing. Farming consumes 1/2 of the food and 1/3 of the manufactured goods. Manufacturing consumes 1/2 of the food and 2/3 of the manufactured goods. Assuming the economy is closed and in equilibrium, find the relative outputs of the farming and manufacturing industries.arrow_forward
- A doctor recorded the number of miles walked each day by patients over age 60 and the number of doctor visits in a year for 40 patients. The resulting data were used to conduct a hypothesis test to determine whether there is a linear relationship between the number of miles walked and the number of doctor visits. What are the correct hypotheses for the test?arrow_forward6B A study was conducted that measured the total brain volume (TBV) (in mm3) of patients that had schizophrenia and patients that are considered normal. To study this, a researcher examined a species of coral that is found in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. At 12 localities, he determined the average annual calcification rate of coral over a period of several years and the average annual maximum sea surface temperature during the same period. Calcification rate affects the growth of coral, with higher rates corresponding to greater growth. The table contains data for these 12 localities. A manufacturer states that the average daily production of its 1.5 kW system is 6.6 kilowatt hours (kWh) for Perth conditions. A consumer group monitored this 1.5 kW system in 20 different Perth homes and measured the average daily production by the systems in these homes over a one month period during October. The data is provided here. kWh 6.2, 5.8, 5.9, 6.1, 6.4, 6.3, 6.9, 5.5, 7.4, 6.7, 6.3, 6.2, 7.1, 6.8, 5.9, 5.4, 7.2, 6.7, 5.8, 6.9 1. Analyse the consumer group’s data to test if the manufacturer’s claim of an average of 6.6 kWh per day is reasonable. State appropriate hypotheses, assumptions and decision rule at α = 0.10. What conclusions would you report to the consumer group? (Hint: You will need to find Descriptive Statistics first.) 2. One method uses ultrasound, and the other method uses X-ray technology. The table gives body fat percentages for 16 athletes using each of these methods (a subset of the data given in a graph that appeared in the paper). For purposes of this exercise, you can assume that the 16 athletes who participated in this study are representative of the population of athletes.
