Oxygen bubbles in molten salt. Molten salt is used in an electro-refiner to treat nuclear fuel waste. Eventually, the salt needs to be purified (for reuse) or disposed of. A promising method of purification involves oxidation. Such a method was investigated in Chemical Engineering Research and Design (March. 2013). An important aspect of the purification process is the rising velocity of oxygen bubbles in the molten salt. An experiment was conducted in which oxygen was inserted (at a designated sparging rate) into molten salt and photographic images of the bubbles were taken. A random sample of 25 images yielded the data on bubble velocity (measured in meters per second) shown in the table. (Note: These data are simulated based on information provided in the article)

- a. Use statistical software to find a 95% confidence interval for the
mean bubble rising velocity of the population. Interpret the result. (.243, .281) - b. The researchers discovered that the mean bubble rising velocity is µ − .338 when the sparging rate of oxygen is 3.33 × 10−6. Do you believe that the data in the table were generated at this sparging rate? Explain. No

- Inorganic phosphorous is a naturally occurring element in all plants and animals, with concentrations increasing progressively up the food chain (fruit < vegetables < cereals < nuts < corpse). Geochemical surveys take soil samples to determine phosphorous content (in ppm, parts per million). A high phosphorous content may or may not indicate an ancient burial site, food storage site, or even a garbage dump. The Hill of Tara is a very important archaeological site in Ireland. It is by legend the seat of Ireland's ancient high kingst. Independent random samples from two regions in Tara gave the following phosphorous measurements (ppm). The intensity of the color is directly related to the quantity of DNA present in the cell. A haploid cell would have a “low” amount of color, a cell in G1 would have a “medium” amount of color, and a cell in M phase would have a “high” amount of color. - Environmental conditions can affect the growth of coral. To study this, a researcher examined a species of coral that is found in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. At 12 localities, he determined the average annual calcification rate of coral over a period of several years and the average annual maximum sea surface temperature during the same period. Calcification rate affects the growth of coral, with higher rates corresponding to greater growth. The table contains data for these 12 localities. Current practice is to add a treatment to the soil to support growth. One of the manufacturers of the treatment chemical has indicated there will be an extremely sharp increase in the price, and you need to determine if it is worth the company’s investment to continue the old protocol. Your data suggests that the average height of a 5-month-old sapling treated with the chemical is 58.2-cm. You collect data on n=19 saplings that have not been treated, and the average height after 5-months is x=56.1 (with a standard deviation of s=5.4). Use a hypothesis test to argue whether or not lack of treatment caused the decline in size. - The output of a solar panel (photovoltaic) system depends on its size. A manufacturer states that the average daily production of its 1.5 kW system is 6.6 kilowatt hours (kWh) for Perth conditions. A consumer group monitored this 1.5 kW system in 20 different Perth homes and measured the average daily production by the systems in these homes over a one month period during October. The data is provided here. kWh 6.2, 5.8, 5.9, 6.1, 6.4, 6.3, 6.9, 5.5, 7.4, 6.7, 6.3, 6.2, 7.1, 6.8, 5.9, 5.4, 7.2, 6.7, 5.8, 6.9 1. Analyse the consumer group’s data to test if the manufacturer’s claim of an average of 6.6 kWh per day is reasonable. State appropriate hypotheses, assumptions and decision rule at α = 0.10. What conclusions would you report to the consumer group? (Hint: You will need to find Descriptive Statistics first.) 2.
