The major difference in the gaseous and liquid state arises from the type of intermolecular spaces found in them. The gaseous molecules have sufficient spaces between their molecules while the liquid molecules have comparatively less intermolecular spaces between them. This makes gaseous molecules far more compressible compared to the liquid molecules that are relatively much less compressible.
The similarity in gaseous and liquid states is that both have no fixed shape. As a result, they occupy shape of the vessel they are poured in.
