On which of these hills does the ball roll down with increasing speed and decreasing acceleration along the path? (Use this example if you wish to explain to someone the difference between speed and acceleration.)
To Identify:The hill on which the ball rolls down with increasing speed and decreasing acceleration along the path.
Answer to Problem 41A
On the middle hill, the ball rolls down with increasing speed and decreasing acceleration along the path.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Acceleration can be defined as the change in velocity within a given interval of time.
If one takes the case of left hill, the acceleration is constant. In case of the middle hill, for increasing speed of the ball, the acceleration of the ball decreases. As the level of the hill goes down, the acceleration becomes zero. Hence, in this case, the ball rolls down with increasing speed and decreasing acceleration along the path. In case of the hill on the right, acceleration increases with the increasing speed of the ball going downwards.
Conclusion:
On the middle hill, the ball rolls down with increasing speed and decreasing acceleration along the path.
