In the experiment given in the figure below, the scientists McClintock and Creighton followed the inheritance pattern of chromosomes that possesses aberrations at both ends to relate genetic recombination to the physical exchange of chromosome portions.

Introduction:
If the genes are far apart on the same chromosome or on different chromosomes, they will assort independently. These genes are referred to as unlinked genes. On the other hand, if the genes are closer enough on the same chromosome, they are called linked genes. The alleles on the same chromosomes will inherit together as a unit.
Crossing over is the physical exchange between two chromosomes that have homologous pair of chromatids. During crossing over, the genetic material is exchanged between the chromosomes. One strand each from the mother and the father exchanges genetic material during gamete formation. Sex cells undergo meiotic division that gives variety of recombinant chromosomes which is the reason for every individual’s unique genetic makeup. Cross over takes place during prophase I of meiotic division I. Homologous chromosomes are similar in length, size, and completely identical to each other; the gene position is also same on both chromosomes, but the allelic version may vary.
