Chapter 6, Problem 17TYK
Summary Introduction

To review:

Whether DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) evolved first or the protein, after the evolution of RNA (ribonucleic acid).

Introduction:

DNA and RNA are the most important biomolecules in an organism. Ribonucleic acid is also used as genetic material in some of the lower organisms. RNA consists of a ribose sugar whereas DNA molecule consists of a deoxyribose sugar, it lacks one oxygen atom at the 2’-position of the ring.

Which of the following schemes for molecular informationflow never occurs?(a) DNA → rRNA(b) DNA → tRNA(c) DNA → mRNA(d) RNA → DNA(e) mRNA → protein(f) DNA → protein
If nitrogenous bases (A, G, C, T or U) could polymerize to chains of nucleotides, could this eventually form the structure shown in the figure above? Would an RNA structure that can act as an enzyme, such as the one shown above, have been the result of chemical evolution with competition between replicating RNA molecules?  Or was it likely the first RNA molecule that arose from a chain of nitrogenous bases could immediately act as an enzyme?
How does DNA analysis help scientists better understand evolution? It spells out the amino acids that make up an organism. It helps chart changes in amino acid sequences over time. It shows us what codons an organism has. It shows us an organism’s genome sequence.
