A projectile is an object that moves through air or space, and is acted upon by the effect of gravity only.
Now, on the projectile no acceleration acts in horizontal direction while the gravity acts in vertical direction. Hence, the downward component of the motion of a projectile will be acted upon by the gravity only. Also, it is known that the free fall occurs when an object falls freely under the effect of gravity.

Therefore, the motion of a free fall and the downward component of the motion of projectile are equal.
