Chapter 5, Problem 89AP
In building a house, carpenters use nails from a large box. The box is suspended from a spring twice dining the day to measure the usage of nails. At the beginning of the day, the spring stretches 50 cm. At the end of the day, the spring stretches 30 cm. What fraction or percentages of the nails have been used?

A piece of wire of length 1.00 m is cut into two parts, one of which is bent into a shape of a circle and the other into the shape of a square. How should the wire be cut so that the sum of the enclosed areas is a minimum?
A mass of 81.0g is placed on the end of a 4.5cm vertical spring. This causes the spring to extend to 10.3cm. If we then change the mass to 191.0g, what is the measured length of the spring (in m)?
An engineering apprentice is given a rectangular sheet of metal of dimensions 500mm x 300mm. She is asked to cut out four identical squares, one in each corner of the sheet, fold up the sides and weld the corner seams to make a metal box. What should she make the length of the sides of the squares in order to maximise the volume?
