Chapter 5, Problem 5.88CP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Using computer programming the value of Concentration profile and time required for given condition should be determined.

Concept introduction:

Equation used for calculating the diffusion is,

Fick's Law of diffusion: This law states that molar flux is directly proportional to concentration gradient. The law is stated as:

  J=DdCAdx

Where,

J is the molar flux defined as the number of atoms passing per unit area per unit time.

D is the diffusion coefficient in cm2/sec.

dCAdx is the concentration gradient in atomscm3.cm.

Factors affection diffusion are as follows:

  1. Temperature
  2. Diffusion coefficient
The following equation is stated as:

  D=D0exp(-QRT)

Where,

Q is the activation energy in calorie/ mole.

R is universal gas constant in calmoleK.

T is the absolute temperature in kelvin.

  D0 is constant for given diffusion system.

Fick's Second law is applicable, which is used to define the non- steady state and diffusion of atoms. The equation is stated as:

  cscxcsc0=erf(x2 Dt)

Where,

  cs is the constant concentration of the diffusing atoms at the surface of the material.

  cx is the concentration of diffusing atom at x having time t.

  c0 is the initial concentration of the diffusing atom.

erf is the error function.

In a railway system with a power source of 600 VDC, I need to achieve a load output of 120 VDC for railway lights. I found a DC-DC converter capable of stepping down 600 VDC to 125 VDC. To obtain 120 VDC from this converter, we can use a voltage divider with the following equation: [R2/(R2+R1)]=120/125=0.96=0.96However, using resistors to achieve the desired output voltage raises some concerns. Is it advisable to use railway-grade resistors for this application? I found some resistors in the range of 1-10k ohms, but I am unsure how they should be connected in the circuit with the lights (the load to be used). I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or schematic diagrams to clarify the best approach for connecting the resistors in this setup.
I have to develop an efficient parallel numerical integration program on a 2-D mesh but I'm struggling. And it has to be in Cstar
