Speciation is the specification of the fractional composition of ions in a solution.  The speciation of a diprotic acid depends on pH of the solution.

Consider each successive conjugate acid–base pair, with acidity constant  Kan; with n = 1, 2,  then:

  • The acid form is dominant for pH < pKan
  • The conjugate pair have equal concentrations at pH = pKan
  • The base form is dominant for pH > pKan

The total concentration of acid and its successive deprotonated forms,

[H3A]+[H2A]+[HA]+[A]=A

And H can be written as

H=[H3O+]3+Ka1[H3O+]2+Ka2[H3O+]+Ka1Ka2Ka3

Where, in each case [H3O+]=10pH

Then, fractions of each species present in the solution are,

f(H3A)=[H3O+]3Hf(H2A)=Ka1[H3O+]2Hf(HA)=Ka1Ka2[H3O+]Hf(A)=(Ka1)(Ka2)(Ka3)H

pKa1=logKa1Ka1=10pKa1=10(2.18)=0.0066.Similarly,Ka2=1.1220×109Ka3=2.9512×1011.

Substituting the values of Ka1, Ka2 and Ka3 in above expressions for pH=014,we will get a set of results which can be plotted as below

Calculation of f(H3A):

At pH=0:

f(H3A)=[H3O+]3H=11+Ka1+Ka2+Ka1Ka2Ka3=11+0.0066+1.1220×109+2.1854×1022=0.9934.

At pH=2:

f(H3A)=[H3O+]3H=106106+(0.0066×104)+(1.1220×1011)+(2.1854×1022)=0.6024.

At pH=4:

f(H3A)=[H3O+]3H=10121012+(0.0066×108)+(1.1220×1013)+(2.1854×1022)=0.0149.

At pH=6:

f(H3A)=[H3O+]3H=10181018+(0.0066×1012)+(1.1220×1015)+(2.1854×1022)=0.0001.

Similarly, the fraction of H3A can be calculated for rest of the pH.

Calculation of f(H2A):

At pH=0:

f(H2A)=Ka1[H3O+]2H=Ka11+Ka1+Ka2+Ka1Ka2Ka3=11+0.0066+1.1220×109+2.1854×1022=0.0059.

At pH=2:

f(H2A)=Ka1[H3O+]2H=0.0066×104104+(0.0066×104)+(1.1220×1011)+(2.1854×1022)=0.3975.

At pH=4:

f(H2A)=Ka1[H3O+]2H=0.0066×1081012+(0.0066×108)+(1.1220×1013)+(2.1854×1022)=0.9834.

At pH=6:

f(H2A)=Ka1[H3O+]2H=0.0066×1081012+(0.0066×108)+(1.1220×1013)+(2.1854×1022)=0.8545.

Similarly, the fraction of H2A can be calculated for rest of the pH.

Calculation of f(HA):

At pH=0:

f(HA)=Ka1Ka2[H3O+]H=Ka1Ka21+Ka1+Ka2+Ka1Ka2Ka3=0.0066×1.1220×1091+0.0066+1.1220×109+2.1854×1022=7.3566×1012.

At pH=2:

f(HA)=Ka1Ka2[H3O+]H=0.0066×1.1220×1011106+0.0066×104+1.1220×1011+2.1854×1022=4.4609×108.

At pH=4:

f(HA)=Ka1Ka2[H3O+]H=0.0066×1.1220×10131012+0.0066×108+1.1220×1013+2.1854×1022=0.00001.

At pH=6:

f(HA)=Ka1Ka2[H3O+]H=0.0066×1.1220×10151018+0.0066×1012+1.1220×1015+2.1854×1022=0.0009.

Similarly, the fraction of HA can be calculated for rest of pH.

The fraction of A can also be calculated as given above.
