Molecular compounds are usually composed solely
of nonmetals. A binary molecular compound is one
in which the compound contains only two elements
(regardless of how many atoms are present of
each). When naming binary molecular compounds,
prefixes are used to specify the number of atoms of
each element. Take a moment to review some of
the prefixes shown here.

For example, SF6 is named sulfur hexafluoride.
Note that the prefix mono is not used in naming the
first element. Also note that the second element in
the name should end with the suffix ide.

This differentiates polyatomic ions from monatomic ions, which contain only one atom.” Ions that contain only one atom are called monoatomic ions. Ions that contain more than one atom are called polyatomic ions. A monatomic ion is a single charged atom, with the number of protons not equal to the number of electrons. However not all ionic bonds are formed with monatomic ions, polyatomic ions can form ionic bonds as well. The prefix poly- means many and atomic refers to atoms, so a polyatomic ion is an ion that contains more than one atom. This differentiates polyatomic ions from monatomic ions, which contain only one atom. Examples of monatomic ions include Na+, Fe3+, Cl-, and many, many others. We can think about polyatomic ions by comparing them to monatomic ions. A monatomic ion is an atom that has been ionized by gaining or losing electrons. The ion has a net charge because the total number of electrons is not balanced by the total number of protons in the nucleus. Thus, compared to the neutral atom, we have extra electrons—in the case of a negatively charged anion—or not enough electrons—in the case of a positively charged cation. For example, a neutral chlorine atom has an atomic number of 17, which means it has 17…arrow_forward

To name them, again, start with the name of the anion when naming acids. Polyatomic anions are named according to the following rules: • If an element can only form two oxyanions then the one with the least amount of oxygens is given the ending ite. The one containing the most oxygens is given the ending ate. • Elements that can form four polyatomic oxyanions use prefixes in addition to the ite and ate endings. • The oxyanion with the least amount of oxygens is given the prefix hypo and the ending ite (i.e., CIO is hypochlorite). The oxyanion with the second least amount of oxygens is simply given the ite ending (i.e., CIO2 is chlorite). The oxyanion with the second most amount of oxygens is simply given the ate ending (Le., CIO3 is chlorate). Finally, the oxyanion with the most amount of oxygens is given the prefix per and the ending afe (i.e., CIO, is perchlorate). When naming the acid of an oxoanion the endings of the…arrow_forward

A polyatomic ion is a group of covalently bonded atoms, with the total number of protons not equal to the total number of electrons. Atoms become ions when they gain or lose electrons, resulting in a net charge. On page one paragraph two it says. "The Octet rule describes the tendency of atoms to prefer valence shells with eight electrons. Atoms react and tend to create more stable compounds since they have fewer electrons. When discussing the octet rule, d or f electrons are not considered." According to the octet rule, atoms typically have eight electrons in their valence shell.
