Concept Introduction: The element that exists in nature as a single atom is known as an atomic element. Thus, single atoms are the basic units of atomic elements. In contrast, the element that exists as a diatomic molecule in which two same atoms are bonded together is known as a molecular element. Thus, molecular elements have molecules as their basic units. Ionic compounds are made up of metals and nonmetals. The formula units of metal cation and metal anion forms the basic units of ionic compounds.
