Why or why not do you agree with the criteria that the nursing student used to evaluate a successful outcome?
Case summary:
During the pediatric rotation, the nursing student found that an 8-year-old boy had deformed feet. This condition would be treated with a series of surgical repairs. But the parents refuse the surgery because of their cultural beliefs. They believed this condition as a sign of good luck and spiritual favor. The nurse is worried that the boy would face many difficulties in the society if his feet were not repaired. The nurse didn’t know what to do to benefit this boy.

Explanation of Solution
The criteria that the nursing student used to evaluate a successful outcome are:
- The health care team choosing a course of action that is beneficial for both the patient and his family’s cultural and religious beliefs.
- Respecting the legal rights of the family.
- The nursing student’s knowledge of the patient’s religion and culture is increased.
- Being faithful to the nurse’s own advocacy obligations.
The ultimate goal in the medication field is to provide sufficient care, support, and to increase the well-being of the patient. The treatment should be beneficial for both the patient and the family according to their beliefs. It is the responsibility of the nurse and health care team members to understand the values of the patient’s religion and to provide treatment accordingly.

Explanation of Solution
The nurse should believe that the rights of the patients should be respected. The nurse should try to learn about their culture. Their cultural community was so strong and the patient should be provided care according to the wish of the patient’s family. The nurse should try to explain the disadvantages of not having the surgery to be done. The nurse should maintain a friendly and trustworthy relationship with the family, thereby trying to persuade them to comply with the surgery.
