Concept explainers
To explain: Why local cortisone injection in an inflamed joint is preferred over the administration of pill.
Concept introduction:
The adrenal cortex acts through the endocrine system under the stressful conditions such as reduced level of blood sugar, volume, and pressure. It stimulates the hypothalamus to secrete the releasing hormone. Then, the releasing hormone stimulates the secretion of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the anterior pituitary. From the pituitary, ACTH reaches the adrenal cortex through blood circulation and stimulates corticosteroids secretion. Two types of corticosteroids are found in humans namely glucocorticoids (cortisol) and mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids or cortisol activates glucose synthesis from protein and are also involved in the breakdown of proteins into amino acids in muscles and influence the immune system.

- give the basics of a disease and its relationship to a faulty signal transduction pathway. Describe some of these diseases in the table below:arrow_forwardConstruct detailed figures and descriptions of three signal transduction pathways (epinephrine, insulin, epidermal growth factor). Explain (figures, narratives) how their structures, functions and cascades are similar and different from each other.arrow_forwardFirst, explain how resting membrane potential is established in terms of ion concentration and electric charge. Next, explain the process of neural signal transmission from an alpha motor neuron to the muscle fiber. Do this by explaining how an AP is generated (ions and membrane proteins) at the neuron, how the signal is propagated, what happens at the axon terminal, what happens at the motor endplate, and explain all the molecular events that occur to cause muscle contraction.arrow_forward
- Help.arrow_forwardE: Using either GPCRs (G-protein couples receptors) or RTKs (Receptor tyrosine kinases), describe: 1. How ligand binding activates the receptor. Ex: which proteins are involved? what changes can occur to the receptor after binding the ligand? 2. A signal transduction pathway that occurs due to the ligand binding (must include a secondary messenger). 3. Any cellular response due to the ligand binding. 4. A way that the signal pathway is regulated.arrow_forwardPlease ASAP. Thank you.arrow_forward
- ignore the highlighted region.arrow_forwardBriefly discuss the features of an ideal nanocomposite scaffold for bone tissue engineering applications. What is the composition of nanocomposite scaffolds? Describe the advantages of nanocomposite scaffolds. What is the fundamental reason of selecting nanocomposite scaffold for bone tissue engineering applications?arrow_forwardwhat is happening here in muscle contraction. - . which of the following statements about heterotrimetric G proteins and their receptors is incorrect? A: when GTP binds to the alpha subunit of the G protein, the beta-gamma subunit dissociates from the alpha subunit B: G-protein coupled receptors contain nine transmembrane alpha helices C: binding of arrestin causes removal of the receptor from the membrane D: G protein- coupled receptors may be desensitized by serine phosphorylation I had chosen option A and got it wrong. What is the Correct answer and explain how it is. Also, where did i go wrong in choosing option A?arrow_forwardReflect back on the Muscle Fatigue investigation we did earlier in this Activity. Choose one of your classmate’s interpretation to one of these questions: What happened to your energy & ability to pinch the clothespin as you progressed through each trial? Why? What might cause one to be able to get more squeezes, in other words, to have less fatigue? Explain in terms of biological concepts. Suggest how the amount of ATP produced cause your muscle cells to be less efficient. When did this change in the amount of ATP produced occur in this investigation? How could you tell? Your muscles would probably recover enough after 10 minutes to operate at the original efficiency. Explain why. Show how specific details from the steps of cellular respiration add details to answer this question.arrow_forwardSelect ALL that could cause muscle cramping (a sustained muscle contraction) in skeletal muscle: OHyperexcitability of somatic motor neurons (secreting too much Ach) Botulism poisoning, which prevents Ach secretion from somatic motor neurons O Myasthenia Gravis, in which antibodies block Ach receptors at the motor end plate, preventing Ach from binding O Hypocalcemia, in which the calcium pumps of the sarcoplasmic reticulum are unable to keep Ca2+ inside the SR (allowing Ca2+ to leak into the cytoplasm)arrow_forward
