The reason for the higher titer value of Convalescent sera than Acute sera.
Introduction:
Human blood comprises of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The serum can be defined as the plasma devoid of fibrinogens, red and white blood cells. The serum contains proteins, antibodies, antigens and hormones. For the purpose of diagnosis of various diseases serum of the patient is used. The serum contains antibodies which are the main reason for its usage in antibody titer tests like ELISA.
If the titer value obtained from the test is higher, it is an indication that the patient's immune response is good and the body contains a higher amount of antibodies whereas low titer values represent lesser antibodies and lesser immune response correspondingly.

- How is HLA serologic testing performed? Question 28 options: a) HLA antigens move through a limited pH gradient and are immobilized, complexed with antibody, and stained. b) T lymphocytes are harvested and introduced to a panel of test sera specific for antigens of the HLA system. c) DNA is isolated from peripheral white blood cells, fragmented, and hybridized. d) B lymphocytes are harvested and introduced to a panel of test sera specific for antigens of the HLA system.arrow_forwardTo diagnosis, we used a procedure known as a "sandwich ELISA" (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay). 1.In the "ELISA sandwich," what is the "meat"? 2.Both patients A and B had positive results. Why are these two patients' outcomes so different? 3.What is one potential cause of an ELISA false negative result? What is one potential cause of an ELISA false positive result? What is another example of how an ELISA assay should be used?arrow_forwardShortly after the recovery from COVID-19, the plasma of the convalescent has significant quantities of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. This plasma was suggested to be used as therapy for other COVID-19 patients by transfusing the plasma from the recovered individuals (donor) to the other COVID-19 patients (recipient). Do you think the identification of the ABO group of the donor and recipient is important and why? O a. No, this has nothing to do with blood grouping. It is only related to the virus and the antibodies against it. O b. Yes, but I really have no idea why. O c. No, not important because the antigens A, B or AB exist on the surface of red blood cells but not in the plasma and when they transfer, they do not transfer cells (only plasma) O d. Yes, because the donor plasma might contain anti-A or Anti-B or both which might induce an immune response if the recipient has A or B or AB group. Clear my choicearrow_forward
- After a foreign substance is introduced into the blood, the rate at which antibodies are made is modeled by 4t 91² + 19 f(1) where f(t) is in thousands of antibodies per minute, and r is measured in minutes with 0 Sts 50. Assuming that there are no antibodies present at time t=0, find the total number of antibodies in the blood at the end of 50 minutes. Round your answer to two decimal places. - Why does antibody titer rise after infection? Is ahigh antibody titer indicative of an ongoing infection?Explainarrow_forwardRead the following study, construct the appropriate 2x2 table for evaluating a screening test, and calculate the listed statistics. Be sure to show your work. A new screening tool is being tested in European airports detect travelers who are suffering from a febrile rash illness in order to prevent passengers with measles from crossing into a different country. Three thousand (3,000) individuals were screened using this tool. All 3,000 individuals were also tested for measles using a laboratory test. There were 300 people who were positive using the screening test. There were 210 people who were positive for measles using the laboratory test. Among those with a positive laboratory test for measles, 20 tested negative with the screening tool (false negatives). 2x2 table + - Total + A B A+B - C D C+D Total A+C B+D A+B+C+D List the values for each cell: A, B, C, D, A+B, C+D, A+C, B+D, A+B+C+D Calculate the sensitivity of the test.…arrow_forwardWhat are ABO blood-group antigens?arrow_forward
