Question
Chapter 43, Problem 2CT
Summary Introduction
To analyze:
The possible reason for the obtained titer 512 and identified Immunoglobulin IgM.
Introduction:
Antibodies or Immunoglobulin are proteins that are synthesized by B cells and they specifically bind to the antigen of the invading microbe. IgM is one of the largest antibodies and it is synthesized initially as soon as the system encounters a foreign particle. The presence of IgM is abundant in blood and lymph fluid.

To diagnosis, we used a procedure known as a "sandwich ELISA" (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay).
1.In the "ELISA sandwich," what is the "meat"?
2.Both patients A and B had positive results. Why are these two patients' outcomes so different?
3.What is one potential cause of an ELISA false negative result? What is one potential cause of an ELISA false positive result? What is another example of how an ELISA assay should be used?
Due to a clerical error, several blood samples at a blood bank were not labeled. The three list below were conducted on each sample to identify each blood type.
Test 1 = Unknown sample mixed with “anti-A” serum (contains type A antibodies)
Test 2 = Unknown sample mixed with “anti-B” serum (contains type B antibodies)
Test 3 = Unknown sample mixed with “anti-Rh” serum (contains type Rh antibodies)
(A) When unknown sample A was tested, agglutination (clumping) of red blood cells occurred in test 1, 2 and 3. The blood type of sample A is…
(B) When unknown sample B was tested, no agglutination (clumping) of red blood cells occurred in any tests. The blood type of sample B is…
(C) When unknown sample C was tested, agglutination (clumping) of red blood cells occurred in test 2 and 3, but not 1. The blood type of sample C is…
If you were using the ELISA to look for the presence of antibodies and the sample gave a negative result, does this mean that there were no antibodies present? Explain.
