Concept explainers
Tall Buildings The following
a. What does the trend tell us about the relationship between stories and height (feet)?
b. The regression line for predicting the height (in feet) from the number of stories is shown above the graph. What height would you predict for a building with 100 stories?
c. Interpret the slope.
d. What, if anything, do we learn from the intercept?
e. Interpret the coefficient of determination. (This data set is available at this text’s website, and it contains several other variables. You might want to check to see whether the year the building was constructed is related to its height, for example.)

- Sports The ordered pairs below give the winning times (in seconds) of the women’s 100-meter freestyle in the Olympics from 1984 through 2012. 1984,55.92 2000,53.83 1988,54.93 2004,53.84 1992,54.64 2008,53.12 1996,54.50 2012,53.00 (a) Sketch a scatter plot of the data. Let y represent the winning time (in seconds) and let t=84 represent 1984. (b) Sketch the line that you think best approximates the data and find an equation of the line. (c) Use the regression feature of a graphing utility to find the equation of the least squares regression line that fits the data. (d) Compare the linear model you found in part (b) with the linear model you found in part (c).arrow_forwardUsing your graphing calculator, make a scatter plot of the data from the table. Then graph your model from Question 2 along with the data. How well does your model fit the data? What could you do to try to improve your model?arrow_forwardFind the slope of the line through the given points: (1. 5) and (5. 9).arrow_forward
