Chapter 4, Problem 11TYU

WRITE ABOUT A THEME: ORGANIZATION In 1918, an epidemic of sleeping sickness caused an unusual rigid paralysis in some survivors, similar to symptoms of advanced Parkinson's disease. Years later, L-dopa (below, left), a chemical used to treat Parkinson's disease, was given to some of these patients. L-dopa was remarkably effective at eliminating the paralysis, at least temporarily. However, its enantiomer, D-dopa (right), was subsequently shown to have no effect at all, as is the case for Parkinson's disease. In a short essay (100-150 words), discuss how the effectiveness of one enantiomer and not the other illustrates the theme of structure and function.

Dr. Margert is developing a chemical product that reduces the accumulation of lipids in the brains of children with Niemann-pick type C1 disease. She assumes her product is pure based on the measurements of physical properties such as boiling point and melting point. Unfortunately, clinical studies have shown that, in some cases, her chemical results in severe seizures and migraines. Which of the following is the most likely explanation? Multiple Choice (one answer is correct) 1.The product is pure, but it is affecting people differently based on their alleles. 2.The product contains a mixture of cis and trans isomers which have the same physical properties but different chemical properties. 3.The product contains enantiomers which have similar physical properties but different chemical properties. 4.The product contains contaminants of a different chemical compound
Tricyclic, anti-depressant drugs were developed from the observation that some tricyclic, anti-psychotic drugs elevated a patient’s mood.          Identify the structural features of a tricyclic drug that were found to affect its action as a pure anti-depressant or a mixed anti-psychotic/anti-depressant agent and comment on the structural modifications that can be made to such an anti-depressant drug whilst retaining the essential pharmacophore.
