A mammalian kidney comprises several million functional units which are called nephrons. The filtering process starts at a region of the nephron called the renal corpuscle, where filtrate is free of cells and proteins are formed from the blood. This filtrate then leaves the renal corpuscle and passes through the different nephron regions.
