Microfilaments, microtubules and intermediate filaments are thread-like structures present in the cytoplasm. They are distinguished by diameter, protein type, and their assembly. These structures are connected to other proteins forming the cytoskeleton that provides strength and shape to cells. Microfilaments can be said as the tiny rods of protein actin that form bundles or meshworks. They are responsible for providing cellular motility. They constitute myofibrils that contract or shorten muscle cells.
