Alveoli are tiny sacs within the lungs that allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to move between the lungs and bloodstream. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses through the walls of the capillaries into the red blood cells. Carbon dioxide produced by the body tissues return to the alveoli by the blood.
