Chapter 33.7, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction

Immunoglobulins (Igs), also termed as antibodies, are glycoprotein molecules made by plasma cells (white blood cells). Igs play an important role in the immune response by particularly identifying and binding to antigens, like bacteria and viruses and thereby aids in destructing them. Igs are classified into five types, namely IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM. IgM accounts for approximately 5-10% of the serum Ig pool. IgM is a polymer of five monomeric units.

Outline the typical immunophenotypic features of peripheral B cells in: (i) X-linked Agammaglobulinaemia. (ii) CD40L (CD154) deficiency.
If the thymus of an adult experimental animal is removed, the following observations can be made: (a) No immediate effect occurs, and (b) after 1 year, decreases occur in the number of lymphocytes in the blood, the ability to reject grafts, and the ability to produce antibodies. Explain these observations.
