Concept explainers
To explain: The variation of temperature, luminosity, and size in each case.
Answer to Problem 34GP
For A: luminosity remains constant, the temperature increases, and size decreases.
For B: luminosity decreases constantly, temperature remains constant, and size decreases.
For C: luminosity increases, temperature decreases, and size increases.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
With the increasing temperature of a star, number of collisions in the star increases, and luminosity of a star increases and size of a star decreases.
H-R diagram represents absolute luminosity and temperature. When temperature of a star increases, the number of collisions in the atoms, and particles increases. With the increasing collisions, more gamma rays and photons are released. These photons illuminate and increases luminosity of a star.
More the brighter a star will be lesser i.e. higher the temperature, lesser will be its size.
As shown in the figure, for A, luminosity remains constant, the temperature increases, and size decreases.
For B, luminosity decreases constantly, temperature remains constant, and size decreases.
For C, luminosity increases, temperature decreases, and size decreases also.
