Concept explainers
Why does your hair stand out when you are charged by a device such as a Van de Graaff generator?
To explain: Van de Graaff generator stand out the hair.
Explanation of Solution
Hair is like thin string and can carry charge particle on its surface, So when a person touch the Van de Graaff generator, the negative charge move from generator to the body. The charge on the person distribute all over the body depend upon the electric potential. Since ends of hair is considered to be a small sphere. The negative charge concentration is more at the hair’s end. Since like charge repel each other, this would separate each hair which tends to stand out.
