Concept explainers
How does the amount of charge on the inside surface of the sphere of a charged Van de Graaff generator compare with the amount on the outside?
To Compare: The amount of charge on the inside and outside of the sphere of a charged Van de Graaff generator.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
The device used to build up high voltages is called Van de Graaff generator.
A regular electron supply is deposited on the belt due to electric discharge. Then, electrons move to the outside surface of the sphere due to mutual repulsion. The inside surface of the conducting sphere remains uncharged. And a very high electric potential charge builds up.
Conclusion:
Hence, there is no amount of charge on the inside surface while outside surface gets charged due to mutual repulsion.
