Concept explainers
Accelerators such as the Triangle Universities Meson Facility (TRIUMF) in British Columbia produce secondary beams of pions by having an intense primary proton beam strike a target. Such “meson factories“ have been used for many years to study the interaction of pions with nuclei and, hence, the strong nuclear force. One reaction that occurs is where the is every short−lived particle. The graph in Figure 33.26 shows the probability of this reaction as a function of energy. The width of the bump is the uncertainty in energy due to the short lifetime at the
(a) Find this lifetime.
(b) Verify from the quark composition of the particles that this reaction annihilates and then re−creates a d quark and a antiquark by writing the reaction and decay in terms of quarks.
(c) Draw a Feynman diagram of the production and decay of the showing the individual quarks involved.
Figure 33.26 This graph shows the probability of an interaction between a and a proton as a function of energy. The bump is interpreted as a very short lived particle called a The approximately 100−MeV width of the bump is due to the short lifetime of the

- (a) What is the uncertainty in the energy released in the decay of a due to its short lifetime? (b) Is the uncertainty in 1his energy greater than or lees than the uncertainty in the mass of the tau neutrino? Discuss the source of the uncertainty.arrow_forward(a) Show than all combinations of three quarks produce integral changes. Thus baryons must have integral charge. (b) Show than all combinations at a quark and an antiquark produce only integral charges. Thus mesons must have integral change.arrow_forwardThe primary decay mode for the negative pion is +v . (a) What is the energy release in MeV in this decay? (b) Using conservation of momentum, how much energy does each of the decay products receive, given the is at rest when it decays? You may assume the muon antineutrino is massless and has momentum p = E/c , just like a photon.arrow_forward
- (a) Find the charge, baryon number, strangeness, charm, and bottomness of the particle from its quark composition. (b) Do the same for the particle.arrow_forward(a) Three quarks form a baryon. How many combinations of the six known quarks are there if all combinations are possible? (b) This number is less than the number of known baryons. Explain why.arrow_forwardA linear accelerator designed to produce a beam of 800-MeV protons has 2000 accelerating tubes. What average voltage must be applied between tubes (such as in the gaps in Figure 33.9) to achieve the desired energy?arrow_forward
- A 3 MVolt Van de Graff accelerator is used to accelerate protons (p), deuterons (d), ³He, and alpha particles (α). (a) What is the maximum energy for each of these particle types?arrow_forwardThe Δ++ particle was important in the development of the model ofquarks. It is a Baryon with a charge of +2?. Strangeness, Charm, Topness, and Bottomness are all zero for this particle. What is the quark content of the Δ++?arrow_forwardThe f meson has mass 1019.4 MeV/c2 and a measured energy width of 4.4 MeV/c2 . Using the uncertainty principle, estimate the lifetime of the f meson.arrow_forward
- Another component of the strong nuclear force is transmitted by the exchange of virtualK-mesons. Taking K-mesons to have an average mass of 495 MeV/c2 , what is the approximate range of this component of the strong force?arrow_forwardCertain theories predict that the proton is unstable, with a half-life of about 1032 years.Assuming that this is true, calculate the number of proton decays you would expect to occur in one year in the water of an Olympic-sized swimming pool holding 4.32 * 105 L of water.arrow_forwardA K+ meson at rest decays into two p mesons. (a) What are the allowed combinations of p0, p+, and p- as decay products? (b) Find the total kinetic energy of the p mesons.arrow_forward
