Chapter 3.2, Problem 21E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:Advantages of ethanol over 1-octanol , hexane over pentane, and water over methanol as solvents for recrystallization should be determined.

Concept introduction:Solvent used in recrystallization should have below properties.

1. It should be able to dissolve desired compound in itself at high temperatures but insoluble at low temperatures. In short, solvent with favorable temperature coefficient should be used for particular solute.

2. Solvent should be chosen in such way that impurities are either insoluble in it or remain moderately soluble in it at low temperatures.

3. Boiling point of desired solvent should be low so that it gets separated from crystals easily.

4. Boiling point of solvent should be less than melting point of solid under consideration.

5. There should be no reaction between solvent and substance that needs to be purified.

Given n-hexane (bp 69°C) and cyclohexane (bp 81°C) in a mixture for fractional distillation, which would be expect to be in the receiving flask: All the contents distilled n-hexane cyclohexane 1:2 n-hexane, cyclohexane
4) A pair of students fractionally distilled a 2:1 mixture of hexane and heptane while another pair fractionally distilled a 1:2 mixture of hexane and cyclohexane. Which pair achieved a more complete separation of the two components? Explain briefly by considering the given boiling points - Hexane: 60°C; Cyclohexane:80°C; and Heptane: 98°C
What structural feature(s) do ethanol and 1-decanol have in common?  State a reason for the observed solubility patterns of ethanol and 1-decanol in water and hexane.
