Chapter 3, Problem 9C
A series of five 0.1-kg spheres are arrayed along a thin, lightweight rigid rod with length 0.5 m at intervals of 0,1m from one end of the rod. The system spins about an axis perpendicular to and passing through the unoccupied end of the rod with a period of 0.3 s. In this way, each mass moves in the same plane along a circular path whose radius is its distance from the rotation axis.
(a) How far does each mass move during one revolution?
(b) What is the speed of each mass as it orbits the axis?
(c) What is the total

In the assembly below the system can rotate around the vertical axis. The left part is a square where R = 0.1 meters, and the mass of each of the four thin bars is uniform and is 0.1 kg. On the left is a massive sphere of radius R = 0.2 meters and Mass M = 0.3 kg. Assume that the system rotates with constant period T = 2.0 s, when, without any external action, as three leftmost bars detach from the system, leaving only the right vertical bar (on the axis) and sphere . What will be the new period of system revolution?
Note: Note that in this case there is no difference between angular velocity and frequency.
A rotating star collapses under the influence of gravitational forces to form a pulsar. The radius of the pulsar is 5.00 × 10−4 times the radius of the star before collapse. There is no change in mass. In both cases, the mass of the star is uniformly distributed in a spherical shape.
If the period of the star’s rotation before collapse is 4.00 × 104 s, what is its period after collapse?
An asteroid can be modeled as a right circular cylinder of radius 150 m and length 500 m with uniform density of 2200kg/m^3. It is rotating about an axis perpendicular to its length through its center of mass at one rotation per 5 minutes. If a space probe lands at one end and begins to fire its engines in the direction of rotation to slow it down(A) What force is it exerting at the end of the asteroid if it ejects 0.15 kg/s at a speed of 800 m/s?(B) How long will it take to stop the asteroid’s rotation?

- Why is the following situation impossible? A space station shaped like a giant wheel has a radius of r = 100 m and a moment of inertia of 5.00 108 kg m2. A crew of 150 people of average mass 65.0 kg is living on the rim, and the stations rotation causes the crew to experience an apparent free-fall acceleration of g (Fig. P10.52). A research technician is assigned to perform an experiment in which a ball is dropped at the rim of the station every 15 minutes and the time interval for the ball to drop a given distance is measured as a test to make sure the apparent value of g is correctly maintained. One evening, 100 average people move to the center of the station for a union meeting. The research technician, who has already been performing his experiment for an hour before the meeting, is disappointed that he cannot attend the meeting, and his mood sours even further by his boring experiment in which every time interval for the dropped ball is identical for the entire evening.arrow_forwardDuring a certain time interval, the angular position of a swinging door is described by = 5.00 + 10.0t + 2.00t2, where is in radians and t is in seconds. Members of the crew walk on a deck formed by the inner surface of the outer cylindrical wall of the ring, with radius r = 100 m. Your 20.1-kg poodle also walks clockwise around the platform, but along a circle at half the platform\'s radius and at half your linear speed with respect to the platform. Your 18.7-kg mutt, on the other hand, sits still on the platform at a position that is 3/4 of the platform\'s radius from the center.
