CP A rocket designed to place small payloads into orbit is carried to an altitude of 12.0 km above sea level by a converted airliner. When the airliner is flying in a straight line at a constant speed of 850 km/h, the rocket is dropped. After the drop, the airliner maintains the same altitude and speed and continues to fly in a straight line. The rocket falls for a brief time, after which its rocket motor turns on. Once that motor is on, the combined effects of thrust and gravity give the rocket a constant acceleration of magnitude 3.00g directed at an angle of 30.0° above the horizontal. For safety, the rocket should be at least 1.00 km in front of the airliner when it climbs through the airliner’s altitude. Your job is to determine the minimum time that the rocket must fall before its engine starts. Ignore air resistance. Your answer should include (i) a diagram showing the flight paths of both the rocket and the airliner, labeled at several points with vectors for their velocities and accelerations; (ii) an x-t graph showing the motions of both the rocket and the airliner; and (iii) a y-t graph showing the motions of both the rocket and the airliner. In the diagram and the graphs, indicate when the rocket is dropped, when the rocket motor turns on, and when the rocket climbs through the altitude of the airliner.

- A student at the top of a building of height h throws one ball upward with a speed of vi and then throws a second ball downward with the same initial speed vi. Just before it reaches the ground, is the final speed of the ball thrown upward (a) larger, (b) smaller, or (c) the same in magnitude, compared with the final speed of the ball thrown downward?arrow_forwardA girl stands on a fishing pier and tosses a pebble into a pond. The pebble is thrown from a height of 2.50 m above the water surface with a velocity of 4.60 m/s at an angle of 60.0° above the horizontal. As the pebble strikes the water surface, it immediately slows down to exactly half the speed it had when it struck the water and maintains that speed while in the water. After the pebble enters the water, it moves in a straight line in the direction of the velocity it had when it struck the water. If the pond is 6.20 m deep, how much time elapses (in s) between when the pebble is thrown and when it strikes the bottom of the pond? 5.195 Xarrow_forwardA person is standing on top of a building. While standing at the edge of the building the person throws a water balloon downward with a speed of 14 m/s and at an angle of 44° below the horizontal. It takes 2.9 s for the water balloon to hit the person's friend. (a) How high is the building in meters? (b) How fast is the water balloon moving when it hits the friend on the ground? Give your answer in m/s. (c) What was the horizontal distance between the friend on the ground and the building in meters?arrow_forward
- A rocket starts from rest and moves upward from the surface of the earth. For the first 10.0 s of its motion, the vertical acceleration of the rocket is given by ay= (2.80 m/s^3)t, where the +y direction is upward. a) What is the height of the rocket above the surface of the earth at t = 10.0 s? b) What is the speed of the rocket when it is 325 m above the surface of the earth?arrow_forwardWhile standing on the roof of a building, a child tosses a tennis ball with an initial speed of 16 m/s at an angle of 25° below the horizontal. The ball lands on the ground 3.5 s later. How tall, in meters, is the building?arrow_forwardAn airplane releases a ball as it flies parallel to the ground at a height of h = 215 m as shown in the figure. If the ball lands on the ground a horizontal distance equal to the height h from the release point, calculate the speed v of the plane. Neglect any effects due to air resistance, and use g = 9.81 m/s² for the acceleration due to gravity. h U = m/sarrow_forward
- A projectile is fired from the edge of a cliff, with an initial speed of 185 m/s at an angle of 40.0° above the horizontal. The projectile rises and then falls into the sea next to the cliff. The height of the cliff measured from the sea level is h. The time of flight of the projectile until it hits the water is 40.0 s. Ignore air resistance. What is the height h of the cliff? What is the maximum height the projectile has reached (measured from the seal level)? What is the magnitude of the ball's velocity just before it hits the ground?arrow_forwardIn the winter sport of bobsledding, athletes push their sled along a horizontal ice surface and then hop on the sled as it starts to careen down the steeply sloped track. In one event, the sled reaches a top speed of 9.2 m/sm/s before starting down the initial part of the track, which is sloped downward at an angle of 5.0 degrees. What is the sled's speed after it has traveled the first 140 m?arrow_forwardIn the winter sport of bobsledding, athletes push their sled along a horizontal ice surface and then hop on the sled as it starts to careen down the steeply sloped track. At the same time, the center fielder starts running and catches the ball on its way down when the ball is 0.906 m above the level at which it was hit. The fuse is timed to 8.21 seconds for the shell just as it reaches its highest point above the ground. If the horizontal displacement of the shell is 149.68 meters when it explodes, what is the height (in unit of meters) when the shell explodes? You must use g = 9.8 m/s2.arrow_forwardA relief airplane is delivering a food package to a group of people stranded on a very small island. The island is too small for the plane to land on, and the only way to deliver the package is by dropping it. The airplane flies horizontally with constant speed of 482 km/hour at an altitude of 675 m . The positive x and y directions are defined in the figure. For all parts, assume that the "island" refers to the point at a distance D from the point at which the package is released, as shown in the figure. Ignore the height of this point above sea level. Assume that the free-fall acceleration is g = 9.80 m/s2 . a. After a package is dropped from the plane, how long will it take for it to reach sea level from the time it is dropped?
