Chapter 3, Problem 3.46P
Interpretation Introduction

(a)

Interpretation:

A formula for the density of the block should be derived.

Concept introduction:

It is given that a rectangular block floats at the interface between two immiscible liquids. The dimensions of the block are given as follows,

Height of the block = L

Cross sectional area of the block = A

Density of the light liquid = ρ1

Density of the heavy liquid = ρ2

Height from top surface of light liquid to the top surface of the block = h0

Height from the top of the block to the liquids interface = h1

Height from liquid interface to the bottom of block = h2

Archimedes' principle,

According to Archimedes principle the upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid, is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces.

Interpretation Introduction

(b)

Interpretation:

Prove that the two approaches used to balance force on the block are correct.
