Concept explainers
Cells
a. are self-contained, living units.
b. serve the body’s needs but have few needs of their own.
c. remain alive throughout a person’s lifetime,
d. b and c.
Concept Introduction:
The building blocks of living beings are known as cells. The body of a human consists of numerous cells. They are helpful in providing structure to the body, they also help in taking nutrients from the food, later converting these nutrients into energy in order to carry out specialized functions.
Answer to Problem 1SC
Correct answer:
The cells are the self contained units. They are inside a water repellent layer known as the plasma membrane. Hence, the correct answer is option (a).
Explanation of Solution
Option (a) ‘cells are self contained living units’ is correct. The cells are the self contained units that are enclosed by a plasma membrane which is a water repellent layer. The cell is the functional and structural unit of all living organisms which are thus self contained and self maintained. So, this is a correct answer.
Option (b) ‘serve the body needs but have few needs of their own’ is wrong. The statement is wrong because in order to function properly, cells requires oxygen to respire and also requires glucose for respiration. Thus, cells require both rapid and long lasting energy storage. So, this is an incorrect answer.
Option (c) ‘Cells remain alive throughout the person lifetime’is wrong. Some cells have the capacity to remain alive while others die after some time. So, this is an incorrect answer.
Hence, cells being the structural and functional components are the self contained living units enclosed around plasma membrane.
