Concept explainers
The growth of a microbial cell requires nutrients which are derived from the environment and transform them into precursor molecules. Based on the
Explanation of Solution
A cell is composed of elements such as elements such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous and sulfur. Nutrient that is needed by the cell in larger quantities are called macronutrients. The carbon and nitrogen are considered as macromolecules of the cell and are required in higher amounts.
The cell that acquire nutrients in trace or little amounts, such as trace elements or growth factors are called micronutrients. Cobalt is act as a cofactor for some enzymes and is required in trace amounts.
Thus, carbon and nitrogen are macronutrient required in larger amounts, whereas cobalt is a micronutrient required in trace amounts.

- Which of the following statements are true? If false, correct them:(a) Boron deficiency leads to stout axis.(b) Every mineral element that is present in a cell is needed by the cell.(c) Nitrogen as a nutrient element, is highly immobile in the plants.(d) It is very easy to establish the essentiality of micronutrients because theyare required only in trace quantities.arrow_forward6) When the chemical bonds of biofuels are broken, they can release large amounts of energy that can be used to power machines. True or False? 7) Where do humans/animals and plants obtain energy from? 8) What are autotrophs/heterotrophs? Are humans autotroph or heterotroph? How about plants? 9) Plants can produce their own food. They can produce sugars which can be used as building blocks to synthesize (manufacture) more complex molecules or cell structures. True or False? 10) Name examples of photosynthetic organisms. 11) Where does photosynthesis happen (which organelles)? 12) Which molecule is implicated in photosynthesis and where is it located? Which of the following wavelengths can this molecule absorb? blue, red, green. 13) Why do we perceive the leaves of a plant 14) Photosynthesis has two parts. Name the events that happen in each of them. green? 15) Plants release oxygen. Does this happen in the "photo" or “synthesis" part of photosynthesis? 16) How are the “photo" and…arrow_forwardWhy are a higher number of sugar molecules displaced when sucrose concentration levels are high?arrow_forward
- Nitrogen deficiency stunts plant growth and causesleaves to turn yellow and then die. Why does nitrogendeficiency cause these symptoms? Hint: Think aboutwhich biological molecules incorporate nitrogen atoms.arrow_forwardPlants make their own essential elements to complete their life cycle. We have figured out which elements are essential by using hydroponic culture, which involves growing plants in clay instead of soil. Micronutrients of plants include carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Plants only require a small amount of macronutrients which include zinc, copper, and iron. There are 4 mistakes in this paragraph, rewrite it to be correct.arrow_forwardWhat will happen to the biohemical pathways when one or more micronutrient is deficient?arrow_forward
- Why is nitrogen a limiting nutrient for so many organisms, and what is it used for? (consider the four types of organic molecules)arrow_forwardWhy are amino acids considered amphoteric compounds? How can stored fats in plants be utilized for energy reserves? What pathway is involved?arrow_forwardName the nine required macronutrients and the seven required micronutrients of plants.arrow_forward
- Most of the micronutrients are transition elements. What property of the transition elements makes them especially suitable for their roles in the body?arrow_forwardRead the following article. ASK MR. GREEN: Organic Produce versus Nonorganic Produce Dear Mr. Green: Lately I see more and more "organic" fruits and vegetables in the supermarkets. I'm confused. Often the organic apples or strawberries aren't as red or as large as the other ones. They sometimes have spots or insect holes. And organic produce can cost three times as much as other produce! So, tell me, what exactly are organic fruits and vegetables? And why are they so expensive? Confused Shopper Now Read Mr. Green's answer. Dear Confused Shopper, You're right. Sometimes organic produce doesn't look as nice as nonorganic produce, and it generally costs up to 50 percent more. Let me explain why. Since about 1950, farmers have used chemicals to grow their fruits and vegetables. They use pesticides to kill insects that eat their plants. They use herbicides to kill the weeds that kill their plants. These chemicals are a great help to farmers. By using them, farmers can grow more produce on…arrow_forwardMacronutrients derives from the Greek prefix makro-, which means which of the following? Small Large Far Neararrow_forward
