Solution: The percent composition by mass of NaCl, Na2SO4, and NaNO3 is 32.165%, 20.09%, and 47.75%, respectively.

Explanation of Solution

Given information: The percent composition by mass of Na is 32.08%, O is 36.01%, and Cl is 19.51%.

Let the mass of sample be 100 g.

The mass of sodium is 32.08 g.

The mass of oxygen is 36.0 g.

The mass of chlorine is 19.51 g.

The molar mass of sodium is 22.99 g/mol.

The molar mass of oxygen is 16 g/mol.

The molar mass of chlorine is 35.45 g/mol.

Calculate the number of moles of sodium as follows:

nNa=mNaMNa.

Substitute, 22.99 g/mol for MNa and 32.08 g for mNa in the above equation.

nNa=32.08 g22.99 g/mol =1.395 mol.

Calculate the number of moles of oxygen as follows:

nO=mOMO.

Substitute, 16.00 g/mol for MO and 36.0 g for mO in the above equation.

nO=36.0 g16 g/mol=2.251 mol.

Calculate the number of moles of chlorine as follows:

nCl=mClMCl.

Substitute, 35.45 g/mol for MCl and 19.51 g for mCl in the above equation.

nCl=19.51 g35.45 g/mol=0.5504 mol.

The element Cl is present in only one out of the three compoundspresent in the sample NaCl. So, the element Na also has the same number of moles in NaCl, that is, 0.5504 mol.

The remaining value of Na in the two other compounds of the sample, after subtracting the value in NaCl is:

So, the number of moles of NaCl is 0.5504 mol.

The number of moles of Na2SO4 is 0.1414 mol.

So, the number of moles of NaNO3 is 0.5618 mol.

The molar mass of NaCl is 58.44 g/mol.

The molar mass of Na2SO4 is 142.1 g/mol.

The molar mass of NaNO3 is 85 g/mol.

The mass of each compound in the sample can be calculated as:
