Concept explainers
In a game held within a three-dimensional maze, you must move your game piece from start, at xyz coordinates (0, 0, 0), to finish, at coordinates (−2 cm, 4 cm, −4 cm). The game piece can undergo only the displacements (in centimeters) given below. It along the way, the game piece lands at coordinates (−5 cm, −1 cm, −1 cm) or (5 cm, 2 cm, −1 cm), you lose the game. Which displacements and in what sequence will get your game piece to finish?

- In an attempt to escape a desert island, a castaway builds a raft and sets out to sea. The wind shifts a great deal during the day and he is blown along the following directions: 2.50 km and 45.0 north of west, then 4.70 km and 60.0 south of east, then 1.30 km and 25.0 south of west, then 5.10 km straight east, then 1.70 km and 5.00 east of north, then 7.20 km and 55.0 south of west, and finally 2.80 km and 10.0 north of east. Use a graphical method to find the castaway’s final position relative to the island.arrow_forwardMultiple Concept Example 9 deals with the concepts that are important in this problem. A grasshopper makes four jumps. The displacement vectors are (1) 37.0 cm, due west; (2) 28.0 cm, 48.0° south of west; (3) 24.0 cm, 69.0° south of east; and (4) 22.0 cm, 53.0 north of east. - Asap plzzzarrow_forwardThe figure shows the path taken by a drunk skunk over level ground, from initial point i to final point f. The angles are 9-26.0% 8₂-49.0% and 6-76.0°, and the distances are d₁ - 5.90 m, d₂-7.40 m. and da = 12.0 m. What are the (al magnitude and (b) angle of the skunk's displacement from i to f? Give the angle as a positive (counterclockwise) or negative (clockwise) angle of magnitude less than 180°, measured from the +x direction. A player, starting at the y-axis, runs 9.50 yards, back (in the −x-direction), then 15.0 yards parallel to the y-axis (in the −y-direction). He then throws the football straight downfield 60.0 yards in a direction perpendicular to the y-axis (in the +x-direction). What is the magnitude of the displacement (in yards) of the ball? What if? The receiver that catches the football travels 60.0 additional yards at an angle of 45.0° counterclockwise from the +x-axis away from the quarterback's position and scores a touchdown. What is the magnitude of the football's total displacement (in yards) from where the quarterback took the ball to the end of the receiver's run?arrow_forward
- While exploring a cave, a spelunker starts at the entrance and moves the following distances in a hori- zontal plane. She goes 75.0 m north, 250 m east, 125 m at an angle u 5 30.0° north of east, and 150 m south. Find her resultant displacement from the cave entrance. The successive dis- placements are 6.6 m to the north, 5 m 45◦ north of east, and 6.6 m 17◦ west of south. Starting at the same initial point, an expert (lucky) golfer could make the hole in a single displacement. What is the magnitude of this single dis- placement? Answer in units of m.arrow_forward
