Concept explainers
To Explain: The difference between the energy level in a crystal and the energy level in a single atom of that element.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
An atom is a single unit while a crystal is a group of atoms.
The energy changes that occur in an atom is quantized. In other words, the energy levels of an atom have specific amounts. A solid crystal consists of atoms bound together. As a result, the ground state energy levels of all the atoms split. Multiple levels are formed and they are very close together. Hence, they no longer appear as a separate energy level but as bands.
Conclusion:
The energy level of an atom is discrete, while that of a crystal is not.
