Concept explainers
The meaning of a sinkhole and factors that contribute to its formation.
Answer to Problem 10TE
A sinkhole is a funnel-shaped cavity in the land and the factors that contribute to its formation are, dissolving of limestone in groundwater, collapsing of roofs of caves, drought conditions and excessive groundwater pumping.
Explanation of Solution
The carbonic acid is formed due to the rainwater coming in contact with the carbon dioxide present in the soil and land. This water seeps into the Earth's surface, forming the groundwater. Beneath the Earth's surface, there are vast deposits of limestone to collect this water. When the rainwater holding carbonic acid gets in contact with limestone, it partially dissolves the limestone. Thus, causing rare erosional landscapes, like sinkholes and caverns. Hence, the sinkholes are formed by the dissolving of limestone in groundwater, collapsing of roofs of caves, drought conditions, and excessive groundwater pumping.
Conclusion:
Therefore, a sinkhole is a funnel-shaped cavity in the land and the factors that contribute to its formation are, dissolving of limestone in groundwater, collapsing of roofs of caves, drought conditions and excessive groundwater pumping.
