Chapter 27, Problem 27.56P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The product formed by [3,3] sigmatropic rearrangement of the given compound is to be stated. The stereochemistry around all tetrahedral stereogenic centers is to be indicated.

Concept introduction: In the sigmatropic rearrangement, the rearrangement of pi bond and the breaking of sigma bond take place. This results in the generation of new sigma bond in the product. In this type of rearrangement, the number of pi bonds remains constant in the reactant as well as in the product.

Curved arrows aid in determining the movement and flow of electrons in the reaction. The electrons that take part in the chemical reactions are shown by the curved arrows.

cis-1-Bromo-4-tert-butylcyclohexane and trans-1-bromo-4-tert-butylcyclohexane both react with sodium ethoxide in ethanol to form 4-tert-butylcyclohexene. Explain why the cis isomer reacts much more rapidly than the trans isomer.
Elimination occurs when (Z)-3-bromohex-3-ene is treated with NaNH2. Under the same conditions, 1-bromocyclohexeneundergoes elimination much more sluggishly. Explain why
What product is formed when each compound undergoes thermal electrocyclic ring opening or ring closure? Label each process as conrotatory or disrotatory and clearly indicate the stereochemistry around tetrahedral stereogenic centers and double bonds.
