Chapter 25, Problem 1CP
Summary Introduction

To define:

The term metabolism.

Introduction:

Cell is also known as chemical factory which help in breakdown of molecules (organic) for the production of the energy. The cell uses this energy for the synthesis of ATP (energy form). Mitochondria are the organelle present in the cells where most energy synthesizing reactions takes place. So cell depends on the supply of the nutrients and oxygen.

Explanation of Solution

Oxygen is absorbed by the lung and the other substances like vitamins, minerals, fat, proteins and carbohydrates are absorbed by the process of digestion. The circulatory system (cardiovascular system) helps in transport of these materials to the different part of the body. They diffuse into tissue from the blood and absorbed by the cells.

Mitochondria present inside the cell breaks down these materials (organic nutrient) to provide energy for cell division, cell growth, secretions, contraction and other body function. All these chemical reactions together refer to as metabolism. The chemical reactions that take place inside the cell are known as “cellular metabolism”. Cellular metabolism provides energy for the regulation of body temperature and other essential functions such as growth, cell division, secretion, contraction and so on.

Conclusion

The chemical reactions that take place inside the cell are known as “cellular metabolism”
