Question
Chapter 24.2, Problem 8R
To determine
To describe: The electrical conductivities of traditional ceramics, modern ceramics and semiconductors.
Expert Solution & Answer
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Traditional ceramics are solids made from dried clay. Traditional ceramics are customized to make modern ceramics. Semiconductors are also solids.
The electrical conductivity of the three materials are as follows:
- Traditional ceramics − They do not allow
electric current to pass through them. In other words, they do notconduct electricity. They are termed as insulators. - Modern ceramics − They allow electric current to pass through them. In other words, they conduct electricity. They are termed as conductors.
- Semiconductor − A semiconductor can neither be termed as a conductor nor an insulator. They conductivity is not as good as conductors or as bad as resistors.
Conclusion:
Traditional ceramics are insulators, modern ceramics are conductors and semiconductors are neither conductors nor insulators.
