To describe: The increase in
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
A semiconductor can neither be termed as a conductor nor an insulator.
The conductivity of a semiconductor can be modified through doping. Adding impurity atoms to a semiconductor to modify its conductivity is called doping. When an element from Group V of the periodic table is added to a semiconductor like Silicon, there is an excess of electrons. The electron which does not form covalent bonds, flows easily. When a Group III element is added to Silicon, there is an excess of holes. Electrons jump from their original positions to fill these holes. In both cases, the conductivity is increased.
Conclusion:
The semiconductor to which a Group V impurity is added is called an n-type semiconductor and the semiconductor to which a Group III element is added is called a p-type semiconductor.
