A material has magnetic properties when its individual magnetic moments are aligned. The more is the degree of alignment, the stronger is the magnet.
A permanent magnet is one in which the magnetic moments are naturally aligned all the time. In a temporary magnet, the magnetic moments of the material are aligned while under the influence of a strong external magnetic field. It loses its magnetic properties in the absence of an external magnetic field, while the permanent magnet retains its properties.
