Concept introduction: The respiratory system is the biological system that consists of specific organs and structures used for the gas exchange in animals. Pulmonary ventilation is also known as breathing. It is a movement of air between alveoli and atmosphere. It consists of two phases, inspiration and expiration. Inspiration brings air into the lungs, whereas expiration forces air out of the lungs.
