Aminotransferases or transaminases are the enzymes which catalyze a transamination reaction among an amino acid and a-keto acid. They are significant in the production of amino acids that form proteins. It transfers the alpha-amino group to alpha-ketoglutarate to produce glutamate. The ammonium ion is formed by the oxidative deamination of glutamate.
